Observation in Carlton
2022

The brief of this project was about choosing an unfamiliar suburb in Melbourne and designing a poster by observing its characteristics in my interpretation. My chosen suburb, Carlton is a suburb embedded with various subcultures including old Victorian architecture from the 19th century, music, Italian restaurants, and patisseries.

During the research stage, I noticed that Carlton is not only a historical place but merges with new subcultures including graffiti art and fashionable neon signs. While walking through the streets, I caught sight of the ceramic floor and wall tiles in front of local housing and commercial places, which was one of the most interesting aspects found in my observation. The tiles tended to have a muted earth colour palette but come with a range of variations in terms of their shape and form, thus this inspired me to select particular parts of their patterns and combine them into a piece of artwork to draw my original pattern of “tiles”.

It has been also discovered that most of the typography used within the suburb generally looks old school while bold, as I attempted to create a bold uppercase type and replicate the ceramic font I captured from my research. Besides, since the combination of the old and new tends to attract people from different age groups hence it connects them as a community, I enhanced the hue and saturation of colours to make it more visually appealing and modern.
